World Wetlands Day 2012

Each year World Wetlands Day is commemorated on 2nd February, which marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands which took place in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea in 1971.

The celebrations which take place around the globe by various government agencies, non-governmental organisations, environmentalists, conservationists and concerned citizens are geared towards raising the public’s awareness of the values and benefits of wetlands and also of the Ramsar Convention.

Lisa's Love

The Manatee Conservation Trust, an environmental non-governmental organisation, based in Manzanilla has recently nominated unopposed Lisa Ramkissoon-Maharaj as its President for a second three-year term.

She is a founding member of the Trust and was a natural choice to become its President three years ago, and now to continue in this position, having been working steadily in the Trust’s “engine room” from the onset.

Searching for whales

"Sharlene Khan (ZSTT) along with Manatee Conservation Trust Volunteers, Rachael and Racquel Lutchmedial, and ZSTT Marine Coordinator,  Richard Joseph, deploy hydrophones in search of “whales”.

Earlier last week, the Zoological Society of Trinidad and Tobago’s (ZSTT) marine coordinator, Richard Joseph took a research team led by the ZSTT’s President, Gupte Lutchmedial out in the waters off the Northwest peninsula in search of whales.

Manzanilla kids celebrate SEA success at Zoo

During the last week of the school term, following the results of the SEA Examination, over 150 students who live around Nariva and attend Manzanilla Government Primary School and Plum Mitan Presbyterian Primary School were accommodated by the Manatee Conservation Trust with an educational visit to the Emperor Valley Zoo.
